Uses of video: Blog intro

I’ve been thinking so much lately about how to start incorporating video into my blog. I just got a new Mac with a built-in webcam, so it’s not implausible to think that I might start doing some vlog posts at some point.

But what I’ve been really wanting is to have a video with me introducing my blog. You see, while you might be able to get a sense of who I am from my written voice, I really want folks out there to get a sense of my energy.

So, yesterday, I asked Simon to shoot a video introduction to my blog for me. The results are below. I’d love to hear what you think, and if you think this might be something you could apply to your own business. This video is on YouTube, but will live permanently on my “About” page.

  1. Nicely done! I get a real sincerity from your intro.

    I think the web intro is a great idea. We have one on our website, and we do weekly videos as well. Part of what we want is to project (and something that video can accomplish a bit swifter than just writing because you get the sense of tone right away) is that sincerely, energy, passion – that there’s life.

    We use video clips to hep accomplish one of our interior goals – to get across that we are more than a book store, that there are people with a passion for theatre behind the product .

    I really enjoy doing video blogs – I’m not that smooth at it, (I um a lot) but it’s a great communication tool.

    Move the camera closer. Maintain eye contact with us, which means look into the lens all the time. Get an external microphone to plug into the camera so we can hear you better.

    It’s a nice idea, but I’m not sure this first try serves you well.

  3. Great welcome video. After reading your twitter posts for so long it’s nice to hear your voice! You are very engaging. Nice to meet you! Oh, and ignore Thom. He’s trying to produce you for TV. It’s the internet. Being rough around the edges is expected. Being too glossy makes you suspect. Many of the most popular videoblogs have exactly the level production that you presented here. Unless you’re targeting Baby Boomers.. In which case Thom is completely right. 😉

  4. Visuals are great – great composition & location choice – you simply found great light and spoke honestly. The external (shotgun if you can) mic would help, but even an SM58 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33QPLbQi9FI (which is cheaper, durable and doesn’t require phantom power and thus an (ugh) external mixer or preamp) on a stand just below you, out of shot, would yield good results.

    But.. we can hear you. And you’re outside, so you and Simon are doing something right. I love it.
