Understanding Analytics

I‘m starting a new series! I like to write my Friday posts as a series, because it gives me a focus, and I know exactly what I’m going to publish every week.

This new series is going to focus around analytics. Now, analytics makes many people’s head swim. Lines of numbers… what do they all mean?

The plan is to take the next few weeks and attack most of the popular social media sites, and let you know

I’m planning on exploring:

But first, let’s talk about why. I mean, who cares? Does it really matter if you have 100 followers, or if you 1,00 or if you have 10,000? Does it matter how many retweets you get on a daily basis?

The answer is yes. And no.

I think, once you begin understanding analytics, you can get a bit addicted to them. I get a little charge every time someone likes one of my photos on Instagram. When I break a certain daily amount of hits on my blog, it makes me happy. I think it’s possible to focus too much on the numbers, to plan and write just for traffic.

But there’s another reason to mine your data, and that is to get better. Understanding analytics can tell you quantifiably what you are doing right, and what you are doing wrong, so you can do more right and less wrong. Analytics make us better marketers, if we pay attention to them.

So, hop on board! Let’s go. I’m looking forward to this!
