How to Add Custom Icons to Your Facebook Page’s Apps

Apps on Facebook pages: they used to be so popular. Remember when we all had landing pages, and could like-gate? Yup, those days have gone. Over the last couple of years, Facebook has gotten a lot more tight with third-party developers creating apps for FB pages. I used to have tons, but now there are very few–and even less that I actually use.

Before: generic. After: more eye-catching, and with a call to action.

They are useful, though. You can do things on your Facebook page, like install an e-newsletter signup (they don’t have to click away from your FB page to sign up), you can stream your blog, your twitter, your instagram or your pinterest. You’ll notice these just below your cover image on your page. One of the challenges with apps is that FB is limiting the amount of apps or tabs that you can see.

Apps are also repeated down in the left-hand sidebar on your page. There are three that you can see, then you have to click on the button to show more. These apps come with icons–and the icons are supplied by the makers of the app.

You can change these icons to custom ones you can make yourself to make them more appealing, branded, and with a call to action.

Your custom app images need to be 111 x 75 pixels. Make your own in Picmonkey, or use Photoshop or GIMP to create one. It really helps if you have some graphic design skills here, but if you don’t, you could always hire someone.

How to Add Custom Icons to Your Facebook Page’s Apps

1. Click on settings in the upper right-hand of your Page

2. Now, in the left-hand menu, click on “Apps”

3. You’ll see a list of all the apps you have installed on your page. Under the one you want to install the custom icon for, select the “edit settings” link in the middle

4. Here, you can change the name of your app as it appears, and you can also upload your new icon.

Cool, right? Don’t forget you can reorder your apps as well, to make sure the most important ones are seen.
