Content Marketing: Are We Doing it Right? [Infographic]

I’ve been doing content markteing online since 2007. That’s just a fancy way of saying I’ve been writing this blog since then. Content Marketing, or “pull” marketing, is just about creating useful or valuable content that is then going to attract people to your site; often via SEO.

You see, when you create valuable content, you’ll probably get found on google searches, especially if your content answers common questions that people are asking “the google.” Secondly, if your site is SEO optimized, you’ll show up more often, and higher in search results. All good stuff.

In this way, you start to create relationships with clients and potential clients… which lead to sales.

Again, my main way of doing this has been through writing a blog, and it’s worked for me.

But the world is (has) changed, and we need to change with it. This infographic I recently discovered shows that I’m not alone in my thinking. Most businesses, like me, create content for the purposes of SEO and most of them are creating blog content.

But that might not be what our consumers want. According to this same infographic, consumers are looking for shorter form content, like social media posts they can consume quickly, or videos. Longer-form content like blogs are not as popular, likely because people’s attention spans are not as long as they used to be.

One thing that I’ve changed recently is incorporating more social video into my social media. I am regularly doing Facebook Live videos and I’m participating daily in fun, short-form video like Instagram Stories and Snapchat.

I have a YouTube channel, and create content for it, but it’s not my focus. Maybe I need to change that.

What are your thoughts on the current state of content marketing? I’d love to hear in the comments below.
